How Solar Panels Turn Sunlight Into Electricity for Your Home

The basic science behind every solar system we install in the CSRA

How Solar Works

Most homeowners in the Augusta area know solar panels make electricity from sunlight, but the actual process is worth understanding — it helps explain why panel placement, angle, and cleanliness all matter so much for your system's performance.

It starts with the photovoltaic effect

Every solar panel is made up of individual solar cells, most commonly built from silicon. When sunlight (made up of tiny packets of energy called photons) strikes a solar cell, it knocks electrons loose from the silicon atoms. This is called the photovoltaic effect, and it's the foundation of all residential solar power.

Each cell is engineered with two layers of silicon treated with different materials, which creates an electric field across the cell. When the loose electrons start moving, that electric field pushes them in one direction, creating a flow of electricity — specifically, direct current (DC) electricity.

Individual solar cells only produce a small amount of power on their own. That's why panels wire dozens of cells together in a grid, and full systems wire multiple panels together in strings, to generate meaningful power for a home.

From DC to AC: the inverter's job

Here's the catch: solar panels produce DC electricity, but homes and the electric grid run on alternating current (AC). That's where the inverter comes in. Every solar system includes an inverter that converts the DC power generated by your panels into usable AC power for your refrigerator, HVAC system, lights, and everything else plugged into your walls.

We'll cover inverters in much more depth in a future post, since they're arguably the most important piece of equipment in your entire solar system besides the panels themselves.

Powering your home first, then the grid

Once converted to AC power, the electricity flows into your home's electrical panel and is used to power your appliances in real time, just like grid electricity would. If your system produces more power than your home is using at that moment (common on sunny Augusta afternoons), the excess can either charge a battery, if you have one, or flow back out to the Georgia Power grid.

Because Georgia Power doesn't offer traditional net metering, any exported power is credited at Georgia Power's Solar Avoided Cost Rate rather than a full retail credit — a detail we cover in our post on how solar can reduce your electric bill.

Why this matters for your system's performance

Understanding this chain — sunlight to electrons to DC power to AC power to your home — makes it easier to see why factors like panel angle, shading, dirt and pollen buildup, and inverter health all directly affect how much usable electricity your system actually produces. A dirty panel simply lets fewer photons reach the silicon cells, which means fewer electrons knocked loose, which means less power generated for your home, day after day.

A quick way to picture the whole chain

It can help to think of your solar system as a short relay race rather than a single device. Sunlight hands off energy to the silicon cells, the cells hand off loose electrons to the panel's wiring, the wiring hands off DC power to the inverter, and the inverter hands off usable AC power to your home's electrical panel. Every handoff in that chain has to work cleanly for your system to hit its rated output, which is why we look at the whole system, not just panel count, when we design and later service an installation. A weak link anywhere along that chain, whether it's a soiled panel, a shaded corner of the roof, or an aging inverter, shows up the same way on your bill: fewer usable kilowatt-hours than your system is capable of producing.
